Without adequate protein, muscle is not built. Without adequate calories muscle isn't built either. Protein supplements are a way of making sure you get enough protein (aim for .5g-1g of protein per bodyweight lb) if you can't get it from regular food. You can get tons of protein and still not build muscle if your routine sucks and you don't eat enough calories. You need to eat (your bodyweight x 15-20) calories per day for maximum muscle building.

It's good. And completely healthy. But not the only thing you need. Supplements are not a replacement of food. Real food is most important. Protein is in all sorts of foods and meat, the protein shakes are just more protein.
References :
Eat correctly, you don't need supplements... Just eat the right foods, stay away from the bad stuff, make sure to get a healthy amount of calories each day, and increase your protein consumption...

If you want to know what numbers to aim for diet-wise, ask your family physician... and change up your workouts with varying exercises and weights to gain more muscle... your natural growth hormone will do the rest with time
References :
Stick to a simple protein powder. You can make yourself protein smoothies.
References :
http://FatX101.com

Protein shakes are hardly considered a supplement. I'm 14 and I drink them. They are perfectly safe, but that could just be my naive opinion.
