Are there any tricks on drilling straight with a power hand drill when drilling into thick pieces of wood?
I need to drill into a piece of wood (70mm thick) and want to make sure I drill straight (at 90 degrees to the surface). I only have access to a power hand drill, do not have access to a drill press. Are there any ways to make sure I drill through it straight?

I use a level held up against the drill.

Clamp the wood down and get two people to stand at 90 degrees to one another and eyeball the drill to vertical. A second method would be to stand two blocks of wood as close to the drill bit as possible and then you try to keep the drill centered. Personally I use the first method it's quick and easy and pretty accurate.

can you get a powerdrill holder? it works the same as a drill press but you supply the drill and merely clamp the drill in place
and voila! an instant drill press. or you can put a level on it. some drills i,ve noticed already have a level built right on to the handle .

had the same problem. it takes a steady straight hand.

Hold a square next to the drill point. Better to use the smaller speed square, not the framing square.

Set the board to be drilled on a sideways 2×4. clamp a nother 2" wide at the level of the bit at the bottom. You can see clearly whether you are drifting because the bit should lie flat against the upper edge of the front board.
