to see what the equipment looks like google image it, they just take a swab just inside. you should be about 18. It won't hurt. it's awkward but not that bad, just try to relax and wait for it to be over. it goes by quick.

You should start going when your periods start. Once a year.

It is not pleasant, but it doesn't hurt.
There is a plastic tool that looks like a duck's bill … it used to be cold metal, so be happy! They insert it in your vagina and then take a little scrape of your uterine wall… it does not hurt - but it's uncomfortable.

Have a look at the site …

It hurts and it is very uncomfortable. The take something that looks like an alligators mouth to open you up, lube it, and stick it in. Then they take something that feels like a pipe cleaner to collect a sample. Sometimes, they feel around the inside of you while pushing down on your lower abdomen. And SOMETIMES the stink their finger in your anus and check that all out. It's not fun! But it can save your life if something is wrong and you don't realize it. It should be done once a year…but I am not sure what age you should be. Good luck.

Don't be scared. I actually just went for the first time and i'm about to turn 21.
You're supposed to start getting tests regularly once you become sexually active, or start taking birth control, or when you turn 18. Whatever one comes first.
They use forceps to keep your vagina open so that the doctor can swap your uterine wall. Nothing hurts, it's just uncomfortable and the forceps are cold.
    Good luck!

no it doesnt hurt, this is the way it goes, cus i had the same questions when i was younger. You go in to see ur gyno, when ur in the room the nurse will give u a gown, big towel, or blanket. You take off any clothes below ur waist, underwear, pants whatever. then you lay down on the … u know that like table thing that u have to sit on when u go see every doctor. ya well u lay on that, except on these tables there are these two long things stickin out of it, have u ever seen someone have a baby on tv? well if u have ull know what im talking about. when the doctor comes in you put one foot in each one it's basicallly to hold ur legs up and open just enough so that the doctor can examine u. It doesnt hurt, it feels really cold, and when ur done u feel really wet cus they use lubricant and u'll have it all over ur parts, but they give u something to clean ur self with. i didnt even know i had had one done till they told me. its nothing. I was told that once you have started to have sex is when u go. here's some more info.

A pap smear is a routine part of most gynecologic exams. It's a test to check the cells of the cervix for "transformed cells" (a test to identify early signs that cervical cancer may be developing.)

When you get to the doc, she'll ask you to put on a patient gown (some gowns are paper, some are cloth) and she'll step out of the room. You remove all of your clothes and put on the gown. If she's doing a breast exam as part of the visit, she'll ask you to put the gown on with the opening to the front.

Generally, a nurse or an assistant will be in the room with you and doc for the whole exam.

For the breast exam, the doc will have you take down the top of the gown and she'll ask you to do a series of movements to observe the breast tissue. She's looking for symmetry and to see if the breast tissue moves properly when you move. Then she'll have you lie down and will put a pillow under one of your shoulders. You'll put that arm over your head, then she'll "palpate" the breast tissue on that side. (Palpating is using your fingertips to feel the tissue under the skin.) She'll start with almost no pressure and then press a little deeper, then move her hand and do the same again (all around the breast and up into the armpit) checking for lumps and stuff. Then she'll repeat the process on the other side.

She'll also "palpate" for lymph nodes along the inside or your arms and in the armpit.

For the other part of the exam, she'll ask you to scoot down on the table so your bum is just past the end of the table. You'll put your feet into the footrests and lay back on the table (the doc can prop up the table so you're sitting up a bit, or you can lie right back. Whatever makes you more comfortable.)

First the doc will palpate again… both externally (labia) and internally (to check the cerivx and the ovaries.)

And then she'll use a "speculum"… this could be stainless steel or it could be plastic. It's a sterile instrument and if you ask she will probably let you see one and explain how it works before she does the exam.

When you're ready she'll insert the speculum and open it up gently so she's able to visualize (see) the cervix. This is also when she'll do the pap smear. That part consists of using a little instrument (we call it a broom) to sweep along the cervix. The broom is about 1cm wide and it's kind of like a brush end on a long Q-tip. She'll "sweep" it around the cervix… that part can be a bit uncomfortable, but it only take a few seconds.

The exam should not hurt at all, at any point, but it may be uncomfortable at a few points, like when the doc opens the speculum and during the pap smear. If anything hurts, tell the doc right away.

If it's your first time, the doc should explain the whole exam before she starts, and then she'll check that you're ready before she does anything. And you get to be in control through the whole thing… so if you say stop, the doc stops. Period.

Hope that helps! Good luck, hon. I'm not going to lie, it isnt fun. But if you breathe deeply and try to relax, it makes the whole thing go faster and easier… and the whole thing will be over within about 15 minutes or less.
