Bogus Workouts and The Official Blog of

Today’s blog will serve as somewhat of a rant on how pro athletes and their training and nutrition are marketed to consumers.  I’ll talk about a few examples, but first I’ll pose a question: does NASCAR really need an official laundry detergent?  Anyway, I digress; let’s get to the meat and potatoes.
About once a week [...]

It doesn’t matter when you take that protein shake…..

So it looks like taking protein helps but it doesn’t matter when you take it…..

Effect of protein-supplement timing on strength, power, and body-composition changes in resistance-trained men.

The effect of 10 wk of protein-supplement timing on strength, power, and body composition was examined in 33 resistance-trained men. Participants were randomly assigned to a protein supplement either provided in the morning and evening (n = 13) or provided immediately before and immediately after workouts (n = 13). In addition, 7 participants agreed to serve as a control group and did not use any protein or other nutritional supplement. During each testing session participants were assessed for strength (one-repetition-maximum [1RM] bench press and squat), power (5 repetitions performed at 80% of 1RM in both the bench press and the squat), and body composition. A significant main effect for all 3 groups in strength improvement was seen in 1RM bench press (120.6 +/- 20.5 kg vs. 125.4 +/- 16.7 at Week 0 and Week 10 testing, respectively) and 1RM squat (154.5 +/- 28.4 kg vs. 169.0 +/- 25.5 at Week 0 and Week 10 testing, respectively). However, no significant between-groups interactions were seen in 1RM squat or 1RM bench press. Significant main effects were also seen in both upper and lower body peak and mean power, but no significant differences were seen between groups. No changes in body mass or percent body fat were seen in any of the groups. Results indicate that the time of protein-supplement ingestion in resistance-trained athletes during a 10-wk training program does not provide any added benefit to strength, power, or body-composition changes.

Become Superior By Making Mistakes

Read this powerful quote, and think about it for just one moment:
“While one person hesitates because he feels inferior, the other is busy making mistakes and becoming superior.”

Random Friday Thoughts: 5/29/09

1. It’s a big weekend around here with lots going on.  First off, my lovely fiancee Anna is graduating from the New England College of Optometry this weekend.  That’s right, folks; in spite of eight years of schooling that culminates with her becoming “doctor,” she was still clueless enough to marry a bonehead like me.  [...]

The Evolution of Weight Loss - Guest Post by Brad Pilon

I can’t thank Brad Pilon enough for taking time out of his busy schedule to do a guest post for my site. Any of you who are fans of “Eat Stop Eat” or have been following Brad on Twitter know that his wife just gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Ro Wilder Pilon (cool name). I asked Brad to do a guest post on calorie deficit and I think his son was born the following day! This is an outstanding article, well worth your time, and will challenge much of what you have heard when it comes to dieting and weight loss. Love it!

Low carb diet slows tumour growth

I’ve had posts up here before about how low carb / ketogenic diet can limit or even reverse cancer growth.

unlike healthy cells, which generate energy by metabolizing sugar in their mitochondria, cancer cells appeared to fuel themselves exclusively through glycolysis, a less-efficient means of creating energy through the fermentation of sugar in the cytoplasm. The theory is simple: If most aggressive cancers rely on the fermentation of sugar for growing and dividing, then take away the sugar and they should stop spreading. Meanwhile, normal body and brain cells should be able to handle the sugar starvation; they can switch to generating energy from fatty molecules called ketone bodies — the body’s main source of energy on a fat-rich diet — an ability that some or most fast-growing and invasive cancers seem to lack.

Here is another one

Carbohydrate restriction may slow prostate tumor growth

“The mice that were fed a no-carbohydrate diet experienced a 40 to 50 percent prolonged survival over the other mice,” Freedland said.

Mice on the no-carbohydrate diet consumed more calories in order to keep body weights consistent with mice on the other study arms.

“We found that carbohydrate restriction without energy restriction – or weight loss – does indeed result in tumor growth delay,” he said.

The researchers plan to begin recruiting patients at two sites – Duke and the University of California – Los Angeles – for a clinical trial to determine if restricting carbohydrate intake in patients with prostate cancer can similarly slow tumor growth. The trial should begin within a few weeks.

“It’s very exciting – this is a potential new mechanism to fight prostate cancer growth and help patients live longer with their disease,” Freedland said.

One of the biggest keys to being a happy person is to be in the moment … or, said another way … to live in the moment.
