Wat what age did you start training Martial Arts?
Wat what age did you start training Martial Arts? Why? Which art? After how many years of training did you begin to think of yourself as competent in your chosen art?

Thanks for answering this question. It's somewhat of a little survey.
This isn't a "when should I start practicing?" question, since I'm already very actively practicing martial arts. I just want to read some of the experiences of other people with their martial arts.

Also, I'd like to ask how old you are now and your current ability level?

I started at the age of 35 I am a 3rd degree Black Belt in TKD
I trained for 3-4 years before I felt competent. Then I would have something happen in class that showed how much more I have to learn.

My son started at the age of 8. He is a 2nd Degree Black Belt

I started TKD at 17, because after being interested in martial arts since I was 12- I stopped being shallow and signed up for lessons at the Y. I'm semi-competent, I just need to practice more.

I started my Tang Soo Do training when I was around 12yrs old and about the time I was 16 I was a brown belt, but I had sidetracked my training for several years but still trained until I returned in my mid 20's and recieved my Red belt.

I am 30 now and am quite close to my first Dan, but I've also begun learning Hapkido to add to my arsenal.

after 15yrs of cummulative training, I do feel as though as I am a competent Martial Artist, it's saved my life a number of times, and has made me a better person.

I started at 16 doing Jeet Kune Do. Stopped training from 18-25. Started back up at 25 (JKD) until present 34 (next month). I also started BJJ 3 yrs ago (blue belt). I started training MMA 2 yrs ago.
In the everyday world I am confident in my skills, but in comparison to the other martial artists I know and know of I would say I have a long way to go in my training. I'm no slouch, but I'm no "Master" either.
I also just started taking Judo.

I'm right now feeling competent in my chosen art(s).

    Good question btw.

I started at age 39, I'm now almost 41 (next weekend), I'm doing Kenpo Karate and it's a total blast. I'll be testing for my blue belt in a couple of weeks, I'm a mom of 3 karate students. Will I ever think of myself as compentent? Who knows? But I'm just having fun and staying in shape and have met alot of cool people.

But this is my 3rd school. School-hopping holds back your progress in some ways.

I started Tae Kwon Do when I just turned 14. I'm seventeen (closer to 18) now. I originally started as a way to get conditioned for hockey, but I kinda got attatched to it. I'm a black bet now and am pretty good though nothing special.

I started training when I was 6 back in '73. As tot he why, well, that is far too long to gon into here, but lets just say it was a circumstance of when and where I was born that led me to it.

The style I studid is the Hakuno-Kai system of Japanese Bushido, although over the generations it has expanded beyond its Japanese roots.

As for when I considered myself competent in that style…after 11 years when I earned the title of master.

I am currently 39 and the Supreme Grandmaster of the Style, which is the highest ranking in the style.

I started training in Kempo when I was 42, a year and a half ago. I will not think of myself as competent until I am a black belt, although I do feel I can handle myself in a fight now. I know I have alot more to learn, this has become a way of life for me, hopefully this will last for the rest of my life. I feel so much better both mentally and physically now then a year and a half ago.

I started at age 44 with my son, then 7. He stoped at browm belt & my younger son stoped at green. I'm now a 3rd degree black belt & instructor almost 15 yrs later.
I study (& teach) Tae Kwon Do. It's hard to say when I started thinking of myself as competent, it's a gradual process.

My parents enrolled me in Hung Gar when I was 4 years of age.

I trained in that style until I was 20, and have moved onto other things since then.

Competant? Not truly until I was in my teens. Then again, how does one define competant? I knew the art in and out, but was still frankly too immature for the deeper aspects of the art until I got a bit older.

I've studied multiple different styles since then with a mainstay focus on Bujinkan Ninpo Taijutsu…and as for competance in that…well, let's say I get humbled often. =D
