Alright my fellow skaters, suggestions for decent shoulder pads with the best in mobility? I’m lookin’ to get new shoulder pads. I don’t play in a checking league anymore, so there’s no need to keep sacrificing mobility in order to protect myself from hits. Ideas? I need something with at least a shoulder cap for my bad shoulder. Thanks all!
If you don’t want to sacrifice both mobility and great protection, then I recommend that you get the Bauer Supreme 8000 Lightspeed… lightweight, flexible and really protects the shoulders too! However, if it’s too pricey for you, I guess a CCM SP120 would do. It’s lightweight and drives the impact away from your shoulders. References : My dad’s a coach for USA Hockey camps/clinics and they’ve been recommending them.
Dude, buy good ones, even if you are in a no check league. I’ve seen many guys dislocate shoulders by just sliding into the boards. Shoulder injuries are not fun.
Bauer 8000 line was designed for a more ‘classic’ (i.e. not gridiron looking) look. Sher-wood also came out with old-school looking shoulder pads; I don’t have the model name but google Sherwood and their website should have it. References :
a few of my friends wear the "Old school" sherwood pads, which they began producing again recently. they are simple light, and not as convoluted as newer pads. I dont use them because i like to block shots, but they should work well.
they are a little on the expensive side, but it looks lik they would allow better mobility. Tom Poti of the Washington capitals wears them References :

I also heard about a pair of shoulder pads that are worn like a shirt.

I have the Easton SP 800, I think it is. great pad for exactly what you’re describing.
Don’t know if they make ‘em anymore though…
edit: I looked and they don’t seem too. And the ones I found under that name look nothing like the ones I have.
