You should really take a step back and think of what you really want. Why do you need 12 megapixels? Unless you do a lot of cropping you don’t need 12 megapixels. The one camera suggested was the Nikon D90. That’s $900-. References :
It is hard to recommend based on your question without asking what do u plan on doing with the camera. Do you need it to be very portable and small. Do you need it to be easy as in point and shoot or do you wish a sophisticated camera as in a DSLR style with a lot of setting and interchangeable lenses. How much are you willing to pay. These and possibly other factors could way into your decision.
My favorite brand is the Nikon for professional style DSLR camera, but the canon and pentax are also both excellent too. Nikon and Canon have Vibration Stabilization in the lens where the pentax puts it in the camera, which is an advantage and cheaper in the long run. If you decide to go with a point and shoot, i prefer the Panasonic Lumix models. I would decide on the type of camera and then read ratings on ones that seem to meet your specs, before making a choice.
you didn’t mention if you want DSLR or pocket
anyways, here are the best options for ya (Amazon’s got some of the best deals and the most important thing is that it’s the safest purchase on the planet):

To buy new digital camera, for point-and-shoot type, it is recommended to select from Canon, Sony and Lumix.
To get the best result, learn the basics of photography.
It is not about the camera. Consistently getting great pictures depend on the photographer behind the camera.
