they need their teeth checked as the teeth at the back can over grow and trap the tongue causing the guinea pig stress and unable to get enough nutrition. this is why they need something to chew on and plenty of hay

most insurance companies will not insure small furries
References :
vet nurse

Guinea Pigs don't need to go to the vet unless you think they are sick. Most people takes theirs to the vet to get their nails trimmed and that is it. They don't get vaccines like dogs and cats. So basically your Guinea is health no need to see the vet. As for pet insurance don't waste your money.
References :
Liscensed vet tech

Well its hard to find places that will actually see guinea pigs ( at least in my area ), but i really don't think its that necessary to take them on a regular basis. If you feel that you guinea pig may be sick or something then yes it's a must. Although guinea pigs do have a very good way of hiding their sicknesses so if you feel that he/she may be acting different or anything different than than usual then you should take them as soon as possible. I don't know any pet insurance places that take guinea pigs but good luck with that. I really hope i could help. By the way i also have a guinea pig and he has only seen a vet only once. He is 4 years old and in perfect health. So just because you don't have regular checkups doesn't mean you wont have a healthy happy piggy :]
References :
personal experience

Hopefully never.

The pet insurance is a waste of money.
They are simple animals and when a small animal like this gets sick, they can be really hard to nurse. I may sound mean, but It's usually better to allow such a small animal to die. I am just being honest.
